The Who’s Roger Daltrey slams shows like “American Idol”

By Kim Palacios hollywoodnews.com: While promoting his latest tour, “Roger Daltry Performs The Who’s Tommy,” the 67 year old front man had a few choice words to say about the direction of the music industry and the role of shows like “American Idol.” Said the singer, “A lot of the new people they choose on shows like ‘American Idol’ and things like that — I don’t ever hear lead singers. They always seem to choose to pick people that are great singers, fabulous singers, but they’ve never got the voice that makes a great lead singer.” Though Daltrey named emerging star Adele as a current exception, he continued to make the case for the unique voice. “You hear ten seconds of Rod Stewart, you know it’s Rod Stewart; Ten seconds of Mick Jagger, that’s Mick Jagger; ten seconds of Eddie Vedder, you know that’s Eddie.” Ultimately, Daltrey had one redeeming thing to say about only one television music competition. “I quite like the idea of ‘The Voice’ — that new show, simply because they have to choose the voices,” the singer said before qualifying his praise with a final statement: “…they might present me with 50 voices and if I didn’t like any of them I couldn’t work with any of them.
